Bungee jumping and its main characteristics
At first we should clarify the difference between these two activities: bungee jumping and rope jumping. Bungee jumping is a head first jump with a rubber cord tied to the legs. The jumper is tossed up and down because the cord is made of rubber. Usually people jump from the bridges or cranes. The height of the crane or bridge is typically several hundred meters and the cord must be much shorter so that no accidents occur. Bungee jumping dates back to the times when boys in South American tribes were ordained into warriors in similar way. And only in the end of XX century such experiments began in Oxford. The key event in the history of bungee jumping is the jump of A.J. Hackett from the Eiffel Tower. After that many adrenaline seekers wanted to repeat his experience.
Briefly about rope jumping
Rope jumping means jumping from the high objects but in distinction from bungee jumping a jumper uses alpinist safety equipment which is more secure than a rubber cord. A person falls free and is not tossed up and down like in bungee jumping. A famous alpinist Dan Osman is considered to be the founder of rope jumping. There exists an opinion that he wanted to overcome the fear of falling and created the system of safety equipment which could make it possible for him to fall free. Thus a new kind of extreme sport appeared. Unfortunately his experiments led to his death because of the wrong length of rope. Nowadays rope jumping is on a high level and sportsmen can feel safe.
