Cherkassy Oblast is located in the central part of Ukraine and borders on such regions as Kiev, Poltava, Kirovograd and Vinnitsa. City Cherkassy is the administrative centre of the oblast. The river Dnieper, the largest river in Ukraine, flows across the territory of Cherkassy Oblast. The territory of the region is 20 900 square meters, it spreads 250 km from southwest to northeast and 150 km from the North to the South. The territory is divided into 2 parts: left-bank and right-bank. Overwhelming majority of people lives on the left bank of the Dnieper. The oblast is new, it was founded in 1954, at that time it was a part of Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The region consists of 20 districts and more than 800 rural communities.
The population of Cherkassy Oblast is 1,328 million people; it holds the 14th place among the most populated oblasts in Ukraine. But it is considered being densely-populated, the average density is 62 people per 1 square km. Urban population is 55% of people while rural sector numbers 45%.
The climatic conditions of the region are rather favorable, that explains the gross vegetation in it. There are a lot of national parks and picturesque forests with rich flora and fauna. If you are a nature-lover you should obviously visit Cherkassy Oblast during your travel to Ukraine because the biggest nature reserve in the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine Kanevsky national park is situated here. Besides we can't but mention Sofiyivsky Park in Uman which is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine and has a lot of attractions.
Many famous people lived in this oblast: Taras Shevchenko, Bogdan Khmelnitsky, Rebbe Nachman, Vasiliy Simonenko and many others. If you go to this region during your travel to Ukraine, you can visit the grave of the main Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko which is in the town Kanev.
