Donets'k Oblast is located on the south-east of Ukraine. The administrative centre is Donets'k. The biggest cities are Sloviansk, Horlivka, Mariupol, Makiivka, Kramatorsk and Yenakiieve. The area of the region is 26, 517 square km while the population is 4, 6 mln people, it makes this region the most populated oblast in Ukraine. The oblast consists of 18 districts, 52 cities and more than 130 towns. It borders on the Azov Sea on the South. Donets'k Oblast is rather young, it was founded in 1938. The main city Donets'k was created in 1869 by English businessman John Hughes when the building of metallurgical plant was started. At that time it was named Yuzovka after the name of its founder. When the population of it has reached the level of 70 000 people, it got the status of a city. In 1924 the name of the city was changed to Stalino and the building of houses for the plant workers was begun. In nearly 100 years Donets'k became one of the most populated cities and a lot of town situated around it were connected into a region.
Modern Donets'k Oblast is a great industrial region where many plants and factories are situated. It is also famous because of many sportsmen who were born there. As the region is young most of the attractions are connected with new technologies and modern buildings. The new stadium Donbass Arena is the pride of the oblast, it was opened just a couple of years ago but is a famous place where big events take place. It is also a home for the best Ukrainian football team Shakhtar Donets'k. The town Svyatogorsk is famous for the great nature and forests, its main sightseeing is Svatogorskay Uspenskaya Lavra which is built into the mountains and faces the river Seversky Donets.
Though most of the people during their travel to Ukraine visit Donets'k Oblast because of business reasons, there is another side of it which you can discover.
