Since recently all the foreigners are required to have medical insurance covering emergency cases, crossing the border you will be asked about it. The insurance can be bought at the airport or in the insurance office somewhere in the city. You may not buy Ukrainian insurance police if your police is valid on the territory of Ukraine and insurance company has an office there, please make sure it is valid abroad. You can make the procedure simpler if you include the insurance in your booking in any travel agency. The insurance covers following cases: in-patient and out-patient medical treatment in case of sudden illness, relocation to another medical institution if the hospital can't offer adequate equipment or personnel. Ukrainian insurance police is not expensive; the cost of it depends on the term of usage. For 30 days it costs $12 and for the maximum term of a year its price is $100. All you need to do is to present your passport and choose the period of coverage. You will have the instructions in English and twenty-four-hour number for emergency cases with English speaking person.
It is also strongly recommended to visit the doctor before travelling and see what immunization you need according to your health risks. You should also make sure that your childhood vaccination against such diseases as diphtheria, tetanus, tuberculosis is up-to-date.
Nearly all the medicines in Ukrainian drugstores are sold without prescriptions as opposed to the situation in most of the countries where you can buy medicines only with a doctor's prescription.
