Luhansk Oblast is the region in the eastern part of Donbass on the river Seversky Donets. The region has the longest border with Russia, it borders on such Russian cities as Rostov on Don, Belgorod and Voronezh, on the West it borders on Donetsk and Khrakiv oblasts. The area of the oblast is 26, 517 sq. km, the population is 2, 5 million people, it is the fifth most populated Ukrainian region. The administrative center is the city Luhansk, among other large cities are Alchevsk, Severodonetks, Lisichansk, Stahanov, Antratsit, etc. The region is divided into 17 districts and 37 towns.
Luhanks Oblast is an important industrial region. The crop of coal has been already begun in XVII century in city Lisichansk. Other places with coal diggings were united into Donetsk Guberniya where Luhansk was the centre of it. Many factories of Luhansk Oblast are the largest and most important for Ukrainian industry.
The climate is moderately continental. Winter is cold and the frosts are often; summer is dry and hot. As you can see the climate is quite severe as compared to other Ukrainian oblasts.
Though the city is more industrial than cultural it is worth visiting during your travel to Ukraine. Not many people know that famous Russian writer, scientist and author of dictionary Vladimir Dal' was born in Luhansk Oblast, you can visit the memorial museum of him in Luhansk where you can get to know more about his walk of life. Speaking about famous people and their lives, you can also visit the museum of Soviet military leader Klimentiy Voroshilov, this place is for those who are interested in history. You should obviously go to the oldest town of Luhansk Oblast Belovodsk and its proud Troitsky Cathedral which is one of the best Ukrainian architectural monuments of XIX century. The lovers of Soviet architecture can find a lot of such buildings in Luhansk, as for example the hotel «Ukraine», hydro hospital or cultural center.
